The Board of Selectmen serves as the executive officers and policy makers of the Town. The three-member board, elected for staggered three-year terms, is charged with the general direction and management of the affairs and property of the Town. The Selectmen appoint the Town Administrator to oversee the day-to-day functioning of the Town.
Their authority and responsibilities are derived from the Massachusetts General Laws and the Town's bylaws. Their primary responsibilities include: ensuring that the town government is responsive to and reflective of community needs and values; initiating legislative policy by inserting articles in the town meeting warrant and then implementing and enforcing town meeting actions; appointing the majority of the towns volunteer and professional staff; enhancing relationship, communication, and professionalism of the towns staff, volunteers and committees; establish administrative and financial policy; setting program and service priorities and spending plans for municipal departments.
The Board of Selectmen is responsible, in coordination with the Advisory Board and Town Administrator for developing fiscal guidelines for the annual operating budget and the long-term capital-spending plan. In addition the selectmen adopt town administrative policies; convening and facilitating public discussion on a variety of important town concerns; protecting and enhancing the unique sense of place found in Princeton; ensuring the safety and well-being of the community; act as a licensing board for several permits and licenses; ensure proper maintenance of town buildings and properties and emphasize long-term strategic planning for the community.
The Board of Selectmen is the official and ceremonial representative of the community.
